They're Doing across America What They Executed to Christianity

Trumpism's most telling and characteristic moments – not its most important, nor most harsh, nor most hazardous, nor most senseless, but perhaps its most illuminating – emerged earlier this harvest season. In the course of several weeks, the American president began displaying the public his designs for a gilded ballroom double the dimensions of the White House and subsequently started solo dismantling the East Wing to construct it.

He has performed deeds ten thousand times worse – the existing assessment of casualties resulting from his reductions to foreign assistance is 600,000 and increasing, and recently research forecast his petroleum strategies would kill an additional 1.3 million. However nothing as distinctive. No previous president would have dared – truly, no previous leader would have imagined – unilaterally destroying large sections of the executive mansion to construct a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the active collaboration of multiple America's wealthiest, nearly all of which maintain dealings with public institutions.

We moved from 'the humble will receive the planet' toward 'the meek shall die to cholera'

As bewildering as it is to observe the leader attempt to overturn the established notion of democracy and substitute it with its polar opposite, there is one large group within America who wouldn't consider it totally unfamiliar. That is those of us – in older age cohorts close to half – who were brought up as conventional Protestant believers.

We have watched across decades as politically conservative religious groups converted the Savior we learned about into the total contrary of our perception of his character. Essentially, they turned a figure of love into a figure of animosity who approves precisely the cruelties that he denounced in biblical teachings; this change developed at a slower pace, over decades rather than months, but it is nonetheless disconcerting in the same ways, a disorienting gut punch for countless people.

A Harmful Christianity Establishes Itself

So let me first describe the Savior that I grew up with, as conceptually Jesus is the center of any Christian faith, and since the rapidly expanding group among Americans might have little sense regarding him as they consider themselves skeptics or agnostics or religiously unaffiliated. I raise no objection with these different approaches, nor with different religions; yet I maintain that exist valuable insights of significant worth in biblical accounts.

It is decidedly definitely not the account of a powerful ruler appearing; rather, a baby is born to displaced parents in a garage, who are forced to hastily depart to another nation to escape secret police. The infant develops in humble circumstances, a working carpenter; his teaching is about love for fellow humans, especially for the impoverished – and not a sentimental love, but practical compassion, expressed by feeding and protecting. Christ's response to violence is to present the other cheek – not as an act of compliant endurance, but as a method to teach the attacker; his approach to wrongdoing is that if someone steals your outer garment you ought to provide the person your additional clothing too.

The evident and straightforward reality that the Jesus in biblical accounts advocates for a form of extreme compassion concentrated on the needy is what has always made Christian religion rather a controversial faith: engaging for the masses, but due to its intrinsic extremism needing to be controlled. During the 1950s it was restrained via weakening – The Protestant faith was so widespread that it practically sanctified existing conditions.

A Battle for the Best Among Us

Hence I have become inspired to witness the steadfast resistance to Trump develop over the last twelve months. It has provided significant comfort to help build the movement that has taken to the streets through repeated demonstrations, and appears to have motivated voters to turn out in significant amounts in interim political contests. We will need to maintain it, and in the same spirit, displaying national flags at every demonstration and appeals to the finest aspects in US history.

We will be questioned ... about how you treated the immigrant? Did you receive him and welcome him or refuse?

The nation is most protected, essentially, by reference to the highest about American history, just as Christianity is most protected by reference to what makes it special and magnificent, specifically the model of the Savior. In neither case does it mean acting as if the most negative of both America and Christian faith did not happen; it means both modesty and belief, a combination that genuine American Christians should embrace.
